The Meeting…
We met in 2004 in Spanish class at Bishop Watterson High School during freshman year. The class was practicing numbers on the first day and the teacher called upon me to recite my phone number in Spanish to the class. Kyle quickly jotted the number down in his notebook and when the teacher wasn’t paying attention he lifted it up so I could see it and gave me an excited “I’m gonna call you” smile. I smiled in embarrassment, having no idea that I would marry him 11 years later.
Kyle’s relentlessness and the fact that we spent the majority of our High School years becoming best friends led us to eventually (finally) date during the end of our senior year. We had our first kiss on the Muirfield Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio and after that day we never really separated.
Love…
I think we knew it was love from the beginning. Our relationship never was and certainly is not perfect today, but I don’t think we’ve ever spent a moment doubting how much we love each other.
The Proposal…
We were engaged in December of 2013. At the time we were living together in Boston. Kyle proposed the night before we flew home to Ohio for my parents’ Christmas party. Kyle took me to a secret park just outside Boston, where there was a pretty great view of the city skyline. It was late at night, we were alone in the park and it was snowing. The city was beautifully lit. It was a very romantic moment, and a proposal was the last thing I expected! Kyle got down on one knee at the park and popped the question then and there.
Wedding Style…
I love classic, timeless and simple themes. You’ll notice that I almost only wear black clothing, or maybe other neutral colors. I knew I wanted my wedding theme to be reflective of my personal style, but I did want to bring some unique flavour. So, I envisioned a neutral colored theme of different shades of golds and champagnes, lightly accented by burgundy. The theme was also Spanish/Mexican- inspired, to bring out my mother’s culture. We used handmade pottery filled with colourful roses and hand painted tiles from Tijuana on the card table and as table numbers in the reception hall. We also had a mariachi band play during the cocktail hour.
Ceremony + Reception Venue…
The Prado, Balboa Park
Pre-wedding Celebrations…
Yes, Kyle’s family (The Sullivans) threw us a beautiful rehearsal dinner at Green Acres in La Jolla. For the rehearsal dinner, we wanted an intimate location where the wedding party and immediate family could enjoy the special night together. We had a cocktail hour in the organic garden while enjoying amazing hors d’oeuvres. Afterwards we enjoyed a plated dinner in an outdoor venue. We finished the night by giving gifts to our family, groomsmen and bridesmaids while enjoying dessert and coffee by a beautiful fire pit.
The Dress…
Sweetheart cut, long, strapless, lace gown by Ines DiSanto, purchased from Mbride LaJolla.
Bridesmaids…
Long dresses in different shades of champagne, with some sort of beading or sequence. I wanted all of the bridesmaids to pick out a different dress that they loved and could wear again. I think we ended up with a handful of beautiful unique dresses that came together seamlessly!
The Flowers…
Since the bridesmaids were wearing champagne coloured dresses with gold beading, I figured a colourful bouquet would complement well. The girls held small bouquets with an assortment of burgundy flowers and green leaves. It really added some color to the neutral dresses and black tuxedos, it was perfect!
Decorations…
Champagne table clothes, glass dinnerware with a gold trim and flower arrangements on each table. These were burgundy roses with touches of beige flowers, natural green leaves and amaranths. We had Mexican tiles as table numbers along with candles and gold vases.
Wedding Bomboniere…
We provided custom sunglasses to all the guests to wear during the outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour. The sunglasses had “Meet the Sullivans” on one side and our wedding date on the other.
Special Memories…
The whole night was perfect! I think we really enjoyed our after party at the rooftop of the Marriot Gaslamp, were we could finally relax and enjoy some drinks with close friends!
