Visit your GP for a general check-up before you leave. Depending on your destination, you may need a vaccination against Hepatitis, Typhoid, Tetanus, or Polio, and if you can battle your fear of needles, a Flu vaccination is also a good idea.
Medical insurance for your trip is a good idea – better safe than sorry!
Your hotel may offer laundry services, towels, robes or toiletries. Ring them – if they do there are fewer things to pack and more space for your second-favourite pair of heels!
Find out about health risks and prevention methods in your chosen destination. The following websites are very comprehensive and free: Travelvax www.travelvax.com.au, Centre for Disease Control and Prevention www.cdc.gov/travel/, World Health Organisation www.who.int/ith/ The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade www.dfat.gov.au/geo/index.html and the International Association for Medical Advice to Travellers www.iamat.org
If you’re buying new luggage, look for something with rollers to make it easy to manoeuvre. Check that the suitcase has sturdy zippers, convenient compartments and is made from waterproof material. Removable straps are also a good idea – you can take them off once you’ve carried your luggage and they won’t get caught in conveyor belts and get damaged. Make sure your suitcase has a strong lock that doesn’t protrude too much.
Invest in a cheap, portable alarm and make sure it’s set according to local time. You don’t want to sleep in and miss any tours!
Instead of packing coats, take outfits you can layer. They’ll take up less room and you can even wear them on top of each other on the plane and save space in your luggage.
The rule of thumb with undergarments is – take enough for one week or for the length of the trip plus two – whichever is shorter.
Black is a very useful colour – not only slimming but can also hide a couple of spills here and there. A happy medium is the key: don’t make your entire wardrobe black – that could look a little morbid on your honeymoon.
