I am in the process of planning my engagement party and in an effort to keep costs down we’ve decided to host the party at my fiancée’s parents’ house (I’d rather spend more on the wedding!) We’re keeping the catering simple with wood fire pizzas and a yummy dessert table full of baked goods. The trouble is – how do you create a cute party atmosphere in a suburban backyard at minimal cost…?
Bunting flags
Why bunting flags of course! Bunting flags are a great way to decorate any space and create that fun party vibe. You won’t need to worry about the electrical dramas that come with fairy lights and depending on what materials you choose bunting flags can be weather resistant and re-used too!

Once you’ve made the bunting flags, simply string them up around the backyard and your house is party ready!
Flowers
Just because your party isn’t a sit down affair it doesn’t mean the tables have to go bare. Table decorations can still sit amongst the nibbles and add to the party atmosphere. Collect old crystal or cut glass vases from family, friends and op shops. Spread along tables and fill with fresh flowers on the day. Head to a flower market or buy some cheap bunches from your local supermarket -with an eclectic mix of vases any blooms will look great!
Ribbon
People often overlook the humble ribbon when it comes to decorating. Tie ribbon to cut skewers and create drink stirrers for iced lemon tea or punch. We’ve used red here but you can match the ribbon to your colour theme. Ribbon can also be used to tie straws to drink bottles. This simple touch adds a splash of colour and is sure to make your guests smile.
