We spoke with Creative Director Robyn, to see what influences her!
Modern Wedding: Tell us a little bit about yourself
Robyn: Robyn Billingham, Creative Director; overseeing the running of the business, all styling concepts, and events that we manage.
From a very young age I loved arranging, organising and styling.
In my early 20’s I used to host extravagant dinner parties for all of my friends. I would theme the events, style the tables with amazing centrepieces, crockery and cutlery, create bespoke invitations and cook a delicious banquet. I absolutely adored the whole process and the tradition continued on for many years. I am in my element when I am able to be creative; playing with fabrics, flowers, paint and textures.
I am always striving to push the boundaries and myself; taking a project to the next level. I also love the chaos, the pressure and the reward of seeing the finished product; and the look of amazement and joy on people’s faces when they enter a styled space for the first time. I am passionate about working collaboratively – it is where the best ideas are born and true innovation occurs. I enjoy meeting people, getting to know them and learning their stories. I just love it all.
Modern Wedding: How did you get started as a stylist?
Robyn: Stemming from my passion of hosting events and creating beautiful experiences, I opened a restaurant. After many years of success I decided to sell the restaurant and open a home décor and floristry business. I think that after my time and experience in hospitality it was a natural progression to move into events. Looking for something new, I returned to study, taking up Event Management, however I really think experience and passion is the real propellant for me.
After having other businesses in the past and managing and styling events for a number of years, I knew that I loved every part of the process so decided that I should do it full time. IGBY Productions was born.
Modern Wedding: What colours and colour palette combinations do you love for next 12 months?
Robyn: I am in love with French navy blue especially used in fabrics.
Modern Wedding: What are your favourite new styling trends for 2017/2018?
Robyn: Ikebana
Although I love a full and lush wedding style, I am enjoying the way the industry is moving towards simplifying and minimising the amount of décor on tables, especially the way that flowers are being designed – moving towards the “less is more” approach. I have being researching a lot into the Ikebana style which is the Japanese art of flower arranging. This has given me lots of inspiration for weddings to come.
Velvet Elements
Emerald green would have to one of my favourite colours and seeing it in velvet excites me. There is something about it that is so comforting and cosy. I dare say we will see this featured in more winter weddings opting for a very opulent feel. Velvet elements such as tablecloths, ribbons for bouquets, chairs, and even bridesmaids dresses will all be key features.
Tropical Luxe
Pantone colour of year ‘Greenery’ – I still can’t get enough of it. Whether it is showcased in large arrangements, table garlands or an amazing ceiling installation, it just looks so good. The banana leaf will be a favourite. The tropical leaf will be used on invites, place cards and linen.
Layering
Lots and lots of different layers; beautiful linens, decadent charger plates, and coordinated napkins. Add menu cards, place cards and other elements to bring the look together. Favours that compliment the style and cutlery displayed in interesting ways. Change up the glassware and add some pops of colour. Lots of different textures and materials creates interest and elements to be discovered by guests.
Modern Wedding: What are your five favourite styling elements to work with right now and why?
Robyn: Linen
Brides are moving away from the standard white linen and moving towards different colours and textures. Steering away from the traditional stark white softens the overall look of a tablescape. I love the use of soft materials to cascade over the tables. Also using coloured napkins helps highlight the colour palette and finishes of the look nicely.
Orchids
Light blush pinks through to deep purples. They are simple yet elegant and work so well with other florals. I love the simplicity of them and how delicate they are.
Colour palette
Dusty blues and pinks
Crystal rock formations
Amazing decorated cakes through to agate place cards. There are so many beautiful colours and textures to play with.
Sequins
I love sequins. There are so many options. Bridesmaids dresses, bridal gown or linen for the table. It creates a lot of fun energy for the special day. I love a bit of sparkle.
Modern Wedding: What are your top 3 tips for brides wanting to create unique wedding style?
Robyn:
- Make an appointment with a wedding stylist – you will be surprised at the value for money you get and the unique ideas that will be born from your inspiration.
- Research ideas – Pinterest is a great place to get started and create your own mood boards, plus you can share them with a stylist.
- Make it your own- Bring your personalities into the design
Modern Wedding: If you were designing your own wedding, how would you style it?
Robyn: If I were to renew my vows I would base my design around one of my favourite artistic photographers, Tim Walker. His style is very theatrical and quirky. It is dreamy and fantasy filled. I have a love for antiques, fabrics and flowers, so they are a must in my creation. I would choose to be married in the beginning of spring so that I could use magnolias and blossom.
There would be an abundance of flowers, overflowing everywhere.
My ceremony and reception would be at the same venue allowing the celebrations to continue seamlessly. The reception would be styled with long tables with lush fabric draped and cascading, creating an opulent feel. The venue would be something unconventional, with an old world feel. I am a night owl so the reception would run in the early hours of the morning for sure!
