Every now and then a wedding photographer captures something truly magical. Today I’m really pleased to be sharing one of those magical moments with you. Earlier in the week we shared Kimberley and Daniel’s Happy Halloween Wedding.
The following day, Kimberely, Daniel, the bridal party and Photographer John Laham of Expressions Photography stepped out into Sydney’s Darling Harbour to Trash the Dress. “The day after the wedding, the entire bridal party got dressed again,” says Kimberley. “We went out into the pouring rain and walked through all the water features in Darling Harbour, much to the shock of passers by!”
“When Kim asked me to shoot the ‘Trashing of the Dress’ I was surprised, because I’d never heard of such a thing. But she quickly explained that the practice is already quite popular in America and added that since the dress has already fulfilled its purpose, what better way to create some more memorable images?” said Photographer John Laham. “Having gotten to know them and their zany, fun character during the wedding, I knew I had an opportunity to create something special. Kim and Daniel’s unique personalities, their attitude and their entire approach to life has helped me a great deal to kick my creativity up one gear.”
“It was so much fun and the photos look amazing!” said Kimberley. “We had people walking by after I got out thinking I had fallen into the water and it was my wedding day, they were a little concerned,” she giggles.
“I tried to capture their natural playfulness, their carefree attitude,” says John. “There was no hesitation at all. It was just ‘go, go, go’! I knew I only had one chance to get it right, and it was all in the timing of the shutter. When Kim, Daniel and the rest of the party stepped into the pond in full wedding attire it was just magic. Passersby couldn’t believe what they were seeing. It was absolutely hysterical!” As far as capturing these beautiful candid images, John is modest. “Well, all I had to do was really open my eyes, mind and heart and capture what was unfolding in front of me,” he says. “Working with Kim and Daniel was so much fun, they have this child-like outlook on life. You get the impression that life is what you choose to make it and they’ve chosen fun, fun, fun… and it really shows in their photographs.”
“John was so much fun to work with. He embraced our Trash the Dress idea and our crazy family. His photographs are amazing, he managed to capture every little magical moment and we hardly even noticed he was there! There were no fake poses, just whatever happened naturally on the day. He captured the true emotion and I think that’s why the images are so incredible. I can’t do him enough justice. He was amazing!”
