Vows 101

Modern Wedding Posted: February 12, 2013

Are you searching for those special words that will wed you and your husband to be? As the final stages of your wedding planning come to a blissful end, you begin to look forward to your special day. But before you can completely relax, it’s important to decide on the words that will bind your new life.

For most, deciding on the ‘style’ of vow can be the most overwhelming part. Vows can be traditional, old fashioned, original, unique, religious, funny, romantic or poetic, and its important to firstly establish the theme of your wedding so that you can combine it with your ceremony.
Writing your own personalized wedding vows can be a daunting task, but it’s not quite as hard as it looks. The first key to creating everlasting vows is to communicate with the your future spouse. It is important to establish that you are both on the same page.
Once you have both agreed to write your own vows, it’s a good idea to ask your self some simple questions. This will help to generate ideas that may be useful in your vows. So place your self in a quiet room with paper and pen and get cracking!

Even if you thing the answer won’t end up in your wedding vows, take the time to write it down because you could be surprised the emotions that are triggered. Some useful questions could be;

  • What is the greatest thing about the person I am about to marry?
  • When did you first realise that you fell in love with this person?
  • What is your most favourite memory of your partner?
  • When you were little, did you dream of your wedding day or future spouse? And do they match?
  • What does marriage mean to you? Why do you want to be married?

However if the question/answer concept still has you rattled, turn to romance novels and great stories of love. Resorting to someone else’s romance does not mean that your’s is deprived of ‘passion’ and ‘spark,’ it simply means that you may not be as verbally able. And if the words of another’s love inspire you – then so be it!

At the end of the day, all that truly matters is that you have communicated your love with your husband-to-be, friends and family.
