The Meeting…
Having never stepped foot on a commercial farm in my life, I decided to try my hand at dairy farming during a uni break from my nursing studies in Perth. I spent 5 weeks working on the 1100 cow dairy farm down the road from my parents place, owned and operated by Garry’s parents. The rest is history, I guess the farmer wanted a wife after all.
Love…
When we were both covered head to toe in cow manure or arm deep in a cow’s uterus and still found each other attractive…
The Proposal…
Garry proposed on one of the last days of an intensive 6 month renovation of our house in Kalgoorlie, WA. We had bought the house as a little project to fill our spare time during a 12 month stint in the mining town. The day had been hectic in the rush to get everything finished, we were still at Bunnings at 9pm buying last minute bits and pieces. We had dinner in the bali gazebo by our backyard pool at 10pm and the surprise proposal followed. We were both covered in red dirt and absolutely exhausted, but I wouldn’t have changed any of it.
Wedding Theme…
We wanted to create an experience that was unique, exciting and would reflect us as a couple but also as two people from extremely different worlds. We both love to think outside the square and create things from obscurity, so incorporated this into as many aspects of our wedding as possible. Almost everything we used in this wedding was sourced second hand and handmade or purpose built; from the shed’s structural materials, to the bathroom fittings. Almost all the furniture came from the local Lions Club Shed Sale and every single decoration and detail was carefully handmade by my Mum and Dad, their next door neighbours, my bridesmaids and I.
Ceremony Location…
Stewart’s Rock – the memorial for Garry’s late brother.
Reception Location…
On our property in a shed. The shed was still under construction right up until that day, so getting in to dress and decorate was nearly impossible any earlier than this! Our caterers came for a pre-wedding consult in January, and we still had calves in the paddock where the shed now stands. They nearly had a heart attack and couldn’t possibly imagine how we were going to hold a wedding there!
Wedding Dress…
Tea length, ivory, lace, with a sweetheart neckline and a short hoop underneath to bulk up the skirt, from Bridal Affair, Perth. I had the 1950’s theme in mind throughout, and I loved the tea length dress my grandma wore and wanted to reflect this a little, though the strapless aspect makes it fairly modern!
Bridesmaids Dresses…
Same style of dress, all different colours and patterns. 1950’s inspired once again.
Groom & Groomsmen Suits…
The look was inspired by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. White suit jackets with black lapels, and tailored black pants with a pair of glossy black and white spats. Outfits sourced by the amazing team at a local boutique called Echo Clothing.
Decorating…
We chose 5 colours to work with as our main palette, but no colour was off limits. Literally all decorations, details and flowers were DIY. Our cake was by The Cheesecake Shop.
I had dreamed of a pampering day the day before our wedding, however, it was Good Friday and nothing was open. As it turned out, the day before the wedding required the coordination of a small army to pull it all off and I was delusional to think it would be any other way!
On the Menu…
Olsen’s Catering served food out of another purpose fitted catering shed complete with sink, benches and pass!
Because our farm is out of town, guests were invited to our back garden between the ceremony and reception to enjoy an array of afternoon refreshments made by Mum and canapés put on by the caterers, while we had our photos. We filled the garden with comfy retro furniture for guests to relax in and played a playlist of 1950’s music to set the tone and create a certain atmosphere. By the time we arrived to the reception, everyone was having a blast, and we couldn’t have been happier.
Wedding Bomboniere…
Our guests walked out with literally armfuls of bomboniere, it was quite comical watching everyone negotiate the soup can plant, preserve bottles and jars and Easter chocolates!
Special Memories…
The bridesmaids arrived to the ceremony in Dad’s old EJ Holden, driven by Mum. My brother opened the car door for her and walked her down the aisle to her hay bale! Followed by bridesmaids and flowergirls. Dad and I were waiting and watching from a concealed spot in the bush, and while guests were looking around for my car to arrive, the music changed and we walked in from the scrub to the length of the song. It was very ethereal with the dappled afternoon light through the trees and the beautiful music!
We wrote our own vows and got through them without too many tears.
Straight after the ceremony, we had a champagne toast at the memorial and acknowledged family and friends no longer with us, then were able to mingle with guests briefly before boarding our wedding party transport to take us to various locations on my parents’ farm for photographs.
Photography…
I was starting to panic that I hadn’t booked a photographer 8 months out from our wedding when I stumbled across Kellie at a wedding expo, I felt like I’d won wedding photographer lotto and booked and paid a deposit on the spot. I got emotional just looking at her beautiful images of other people’s weddings she had on display (and that’s not like me at all). Best wedding decision I ever made!
Kellie captured the day better and more stylishly than we could have ever imagined. Throughout the process she was down to earth, calm, had a great sense of humour, kept things moving along, didn’t make us pose and is extremely talented in all aspects of her craft. She was everything we didn’t know we wanted in a photographer and an absolute highlight of our wedding experience.
Wedding Music…
Ceremony:
Bridesmaids Processional: A Thousand Years – Christina Perri
Bridal Entrance: Different Worlds – Jes Hudak
Bridal Party Recessional: Sugar Sugar – The Archies
Reception:
Reception Entrance: Do You Love Me – The Contours – Played by Baker Boys Band
The First Dance: My Girl – The Temptations – Played by Baker Boys Band
Honeymoon…
Cairns for a week, then we road tripped to Brisbane in a week. A highlight for Garry was the Rockhampton Cattle Sale, I loved the luxurious rainforest bungalows we stayed in! Like I say – different worlds!
Life after the wedding…
We still live on the dairy farm in Busselton, on the property where the reception was held. Our lives revolve around the management of our large scale dairy business, and there’s never a dull moment! We are expecting a baby at Christmas time, so that should dictate things for a while – big changes ahead!
