The average wedding party is made up of 5 on either side, so this is a great place to start when determining how many bridesmaids and groomsmen to have. For a smaller wedding with around 50 – 60 guests, ideally no more than 4. For a larger wedding of around 160, you could go up to 10-12 if you and your partner really wanted. Keep in mind, the budget also comes into play – the more you have, the more expensive it becomes.

Be prepared for some hurt feelings. After the excitement of choosing your bridal party has calmed, you need to prepare yourself for some uncomfortable conversations. This may come from someone you aren’t able to include as a bridesmaid – especially if you were their bridesmaid. Whatever the case may be, it is important to be prepared. In saying that, remember to not be so hard on yourself – you can’t make everyone happy. Here are some things you can do:
- Have an explanation prepared.
- Express how much you value your friendship and that they are a very important part of your life.
- Avoid saying you like someone else more or you feel closer to another person, even if that’s the case. You can mention their location, a family obligation, or that you’re limiting the wedding party to adults only. Plan what to say so you won’t have regrets later.
- Have other positions of honor for those who weren’t selected to be bridesmaids. Keep your request positive and express that you value their friendship. For example, you might tell them that you’d like for them to be in charge of the reception table after the wedding because they has such a warm and welcoming personality.
