With sweeping harbour views, soft lilac florals, and deeply meaningful cultural traditions, Wendy Su and Henry Wang’s wedding on 18 October 2025 was a beautiful reflection of their journey together one that began with study notes, long-distance conversations, and a quiet, growing connection.
Set across two of Sydney’s most iconic venues Gili Rooftop at Taronga Zoo and Sergeants Mess their celebration was a seamless fusion of modern botanical styling, heartfelt heritage, and elevated luxury, brought to life by Couture Wedding Planning and an exceptional creative team.
A Love Story That Started with a Message
Wendy and Henry first crossed paths at a university gaming event. Henry happened to show up, and shortly after, slid into Wendy’s Facebook messages asking for study notes. Wendy happily shared them though she still laughs about the fact he never actually said thank you.
From those small, slightly awkward beginnings, something slowly grew. They stayed connected even when Henry moved to China, long before platforms like Discord made staying in touch easy. By the second year of university, Henry finally built up the courage to ask Wendy out.
At the time, Wendy had quite a few admirers and asked Henry to wait while she thought about it. In the end, she chose him for one simple reason: with Henry, she felt the most comfortable and most connected.
“There wasn’t one defining moment,” Wendy shares. “It was just a natural progression of getting to know each other completely the good and the bad, until we couldn’t imagine life with anyone else.”
A Surprise Proposal Years in the Making
Henry’s proposal was months in the making and executed with the help of an impressive team of friends who managed to keep the secret entirely intact.
The cover story? A girls’ trip for Cindy’s “birthday,” complete with hair and nail appointments to make everything seem completely normal. Wendy was convinced they were heading to Berry and even posted on Instagram mid-drive: “en route to Berry.”
Meanwhile, Henry and the boys were already at Ocean Farm, setting up a glowing “Marry Me” sign.
When Wendy arrived, she was still blissfully unaware. The blindfold came off and there was Henry, waiting with the biggest surprise of her life. Surrounded by friends who had played their parts perfectly, he got down on one knee this time not to ask for notes, but to ask her to be his forever.
She said YES.
Getting Ready in Mosman
The wedding day began at The Albert Hotel in Mosman, where Wendy and Henry prepared in separate suites overlooking the harbour.
Wendy’s morning was guided by Sophie Lau Makeup, who created multiple soft-glam looks as Wendy changed outfits throughout the day. She stepped into her stunning Enzoani gown from Eternal Bridal, while Henry looked effortlessly sharp in his custom Woolcott Street tuxedo.
A Rooftop Tea Ceremony with Harbour Views
The first celebration unfolded at Gili Rooftop, Taronga Zoo, with panoramic views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Here, Wendy and Henry honoured their heritage with a traditional tea ceremony, one of their most important must-haves when planning the day.
Couture Wedding Planning styled the space with vibrant red florals and gold accents, symbolising prosperity, respect, and unity. The ceremony honoured family elders and included the gifting of red envelopes and jewellery, marking the official union of two families.
For Wendy, this moment held special meaning. She wore gold jewellery gifted by family, including dragon and phoenix bangles representing harmony and balance, and a layered gold pig necklace symbolising prosperity and fertility.
Salt Atelier captured every emotional moment, while The Modern Bride’s BFF documented behind-the-scenes memories for the couple to treasure.
An Enchanted Garden Ceremony
Following the tea ceremony, the rooftop was transformed into a modern botanical dream. Inspired by their vision of a “garden by the water,” Couture Wedding Planning led a full space transformation using soft lilac, pink, and white florals.
The Fabled Florette created lush focal points, including a cascading floral arch filled with layered textures and tonal depth. Ceiling flowers, carefully chosen in the couple’s palette, added a romantic, immersive feel another key priority for Wendy and Henry.
As Wendy walked down the aisle, wearing her Petunia by Enzoani gown, the space felt intimate, elegant, and deeply personal.
“I loved every aspect of my dress,” Wendy says. “It made me feel the best I ever have. It matched both my personality and the wedding vibe perfectly.”
The ceremony was officiated by trilingual celebrant Katrina Lai, ensuring every moment felt inclusive and meaningful.
Iconic Harbour Portraits
After exchanging vows, Wendy and Henry slipped away to Mary Booth Lookout for portraits. Guided by Salt Atelier, they wandered along the foreshore, framed by Sydney’s skyline, the Harbour Bridge, and the Opera House.
The resulting images were cinematic, emotional, and timeless capturing the quiet connection they’ve shared since their university days.
A Luxe Reception at Sergeants Mess
As the sun set, guests made their way to Sergeants Mess for an evening of refined celebration.
Couture Wedding Planning curated a reception that balanced warmth and opulence, with floral ceiling installations by The Fabled Florette setting the tone. Fairytale Events created a dreamy draped backdrop, while Harbourside Decorators’ gold-rimmed chairs and Event Hire Services’ linens completed the look.
Peppermint Press’ powder-pink stationery added a cohesive finishing touch.
Dinner was accompanied by The One Groove Band, while guests enjoyed interactive moments with No Filter Photo Booth and live illustrations by Belinda Xia keeping the atmosphere engaging and playful.
Fireworks, Tears & a Packed Dance Floor
One of the most emotional moments of the day came during the vow readings.
“Many tears were shed, mainly by me,” Wendy laughs. “Which surprised everyone, because I’m not usually a crier.”
The most unforgettable surprise followed during the cake-cutting. Guests were escorted onto the balcony as Wendy and Henry cut their Dulcet Cakes creation before a custom fireworks display by Sydney Fireworks and Pyrotechnics lit up the harbour sky.
It was a nerve-wracking moment, perfectly timed with music and movement and executed flawlessly.
After formalities, the Limited-Edition Band took over, keeping the dance floor packed well into the night.
A Celebration of Culture, Connection & Love
From symbolic tea ceremonies to botanical styling, trilingual hosting, and breathtaking harbour views, Wendy and Henry’s wedding was a heartfelt reflection of who they are and where they’ve come from.
It honoured family, celebrated friendship, and captured a love story that began with study notes and grew into a lifetime commitment.
Every detail from ceiling florals to fireworks was intentional, meaningful, and beautifully executed.
It was, in every sense, a modern love story told through tradition, design, and devotion.
