Countdown to your Destination Wedding

Remember the old adage about proper preparation? Here’s a timeline to help you get the best out of your destination wedding.

12 months

Send guests a ‘save the date’ notice so they can plan ahead and get organised – from passports to hotels if necessary.

8 months

Visit your travel agent or browse the net – do your research. Find the best on flights and hotels. Hotels and airlines may be able to offer special group rates.

6 months

Send invitations with all the details. Consider creating a wedding website where guests may RSVP and get information on hotels, transport, restaurants and activities planned, and where you can post photos of the event for everybody’s viewing pleasure. Look up and book any wedding suppliers.

5 months

Consider engaging the wedding planner at your hotel or resort to coordinate the details of your wedding and reception.

4 months

Get the lowdown on legal documentation you need at your chosen destination. If marrying overseas, call the country’s consulate or tourist bureau in Australia to ask about Visa requirements and other red tape. Many professional wedding planners will handle the details, but it’s good for you to know where you stand too.

3 months

Get familiar with your destination – research activities so you and your guests can have some fun. Send out questionnaire to invitees about preferred activities.

1 month

Confirm guest numbers and bookings.

I week

Call each member of your wedding party and double check that they’re clear on all arrangements and are looking forward to a fantastic getaway.

3 or 4 days

Fly to your wedding destination (don’t forget to pack your wedding gown, shoes, jewellery, groom and any other essentials that you can’t replace at the last minute!). When you arrive, meet with your planner and iron out any potential glitches. Then give yourselves a breather before the big day! #hooray!
