Things To Know If You’re Eloping

Modern Wedding Posted: June 20, 2020

If the idea of a huge wedding isn’t for you and you’re looking to get married as soon as possible, you may be looking into spontaneous elopements! Whatever your reason, eloping lets you control your big day, whether it’s overseas or in unconventional wedding attire. It’s your decision! We have collated the top things you need to know if you’re eloping!

Reactions…

Your close family and friend’s reactions when hearing about your choice to elope should be expected, but don’t be discouraged! They just want to celebrate your big day with you, however eloping doesn’t mean they can’t be involved. Try to find a way to incorporate your closest friends and family into the ceremony so they don’t feel like they are completely missed out on celebrating with you! You can always have a celebration with them after you are officially newlyweds!

Legal Details…

It’s important to organise these details in advance. Consider what needs to be done before the elopement. This could include marriage license appointments, waiting periods, or any necessary documentation. Handling this earlier will save you the hassle later!

Rings…

The choice of exchanging rings is totally optional, but very symbolic! Fortunately, you don’t need to spend an absurd amount of money on the rings, or rather choose to not have them at all!

Vows…

Vows are a great way to personalise an elopement, tying it back to the symbolic and traditional wedding. Fortunately, you can choose to integrate vows into your ceremony or not. If this is the case, decide ahead of time so you have time for both you and your partner to write the perfect vows!

Photography…

Just because you aren’t having an enormous wedding doesn’t mean you don’t want to document it! Hiring a photographer for the day you’re eloping means you can capture those special moments, for a much cheaper price… Photographers have hourly rates, so you may choose just hire them for a few hours to get that perfect shot! Booking well in advance with also save you from a range of unnecessary costs, so plan ahead!

Flowers…

If you’re still interested in wedding flowers, this is totally an option for you! If you’re not looking to hire a professional florist, you can always grab your favourite arrangement from the local flower shop on the morning of the big day! You’ll likely only need a bouquet so the decision should be short and sweet.

Hair and Makeup…

Whether you choose to use a salon and have your hair and makeup professionally done or choose to DIY, you’ll need to organise what tools you’ll need or appointments you need to book! Even though it isn’t a huge celebration, you still want to be looking and feeling your best. After all, it’s your big day!

Attire…

The best part of the elopement is that anything goes! Your choice of clothing is all up to you, whether it’s that beautiful bridal gown or what you feel most comfortable in. Make sure you and your partner coordinate your attire, so you both fit together for your big day!

Travel…

With eloping comes far fewer guests. If that’s the case then why not treat yourself to an elopement away? Even consider combining your elopement and honeymoon so you can celebrate your marriage straight away! If you do choose to elope somewhere else, ensure that you make your travel arrangements in advance.

Announce…

Keep your family and friends in the loop and let them know you’re married! An important post elopement consideration is to make sure they’re not waiting for the save the date. Don’t forget to celebrate your new marital status with a party and don’t downplay your elopement – give it the celebration it deserves!
