Top 20 Best Wedding Movie Moments

Modern Wedding Posted: October 14, 2016

One of the best parts of your engagement is revisiting your favourite wedding movies and revelling in the stories as a bride-to-be! To kick off your much-watch list, we’ve rounded up our top twenty.

They’re the kind of films that go really well with a bottle of wine and four blocks of chocolate. From classics like The Princess Bride and The Godfather to modern day comedies like Bridesmaids and The Wedding Singer, these flicks are best enjoyed with either a couple of bridesmaids or your groom-to-be. You’ll quickly find that you’re not alone in the chaos of planning a wedding!

Father of the Bride

The crème de la crème of wedding films, Father of the Bride stars Steve Martin as George Banks who shares in the panic of every dad coming to terms with giving his daughter away. From George’s opening monologue, to meeting the in-laws and an eccentric wedding planner, this film is hilarious and totally touching. If you haven’t seen Annie Banks become Annie Banks-Mackenzie, you’re missing out!

Love Actually

Who could forget the giant band and chorus that shows up and surprises Juliet (Keira Knightly) on her wedding day? They play a version of “All You Need is Love” by The Beatles. The spectacle is organised by the best man who is only a little bit in love with the bride. Still, the sentiment is extremely sweet!

The Godfather

Yes, even the Godfather has a noteworthy wedding scene. It’s one of the most lavish and opulent celebrations you’ll find in film. After all, Vito Corleone famously says, “no Sicilian can refuse any request on his daughter’s wedding day”.

Four Weddings and a Funeral

The best part of this ceremony has got to be Mr. Bean playing the role of a Vicar who bumbles over every line. Charles (Hugh Grant) eventually takes Carrie to be his “awfully wedded wife”. Classic.

Bridesmaids

See some of Hollywood’s funniest women battle it out to become the alpha bridesmaid. The closing scene where the bridal party dance and sing along with Wilson Phillips to their hit song “Hold On” is gold. This is a must see with your girl squad in the lead up to your wedding.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Essentially a wedding is the coming together of two families along with all their quirks. Anyone with a big family will be able to relate to this hilarious film about well-meaning parents and relatives who are eager to give their two cents. If the whole wedding planning process is giving you a headache, take some time out to watch this.

The Wedding Singer

Robbie and Julia’s relationship is summed up perfectly with this super cute song he writes for her:

“I wanna make you smile whenever you’re sad / Carry you around when your arthritis is bad / All I wanna do is grow old with you

I’ll get your medicine when your tummy aches / Build you a fire if the furnace breaks / Oh it could be so nice, growing old with you

I’ll miss you / Kiss you / Give you my coat when you are cold

Need you / Feed you / Even let ya hold the remote control

So let me do the dishes in our kitchen sink / Put you to bed if you’ve had too much to drink / I could be the man who grows old with you / I wanna grow old with you”

The Graduate

It’s not technically a wedding, but it’s one of the most memorable wedding moments ever. Dustin Hoffman’s character Benjamin causes chaos at Elaine’s wedding, locking all the guests in the church with a huge cross and running off with the bride. The final shot of the Benjamin and Elaine coming to terms with what they’ve done is iconic.

Sex and the City

In true Carrie Bradshaw fashion, she and her New York posse rock up wearing show-stopping gowns. In true Big fashion, he gets cold feet. Thankfully we remember the wedding for the frocks and not the latter scenario. The Vivienne Westwood gown that Sarah Jessica Parker wore actually sold out as soon as the film was released.

Come on, your inner teenager is jumping for joy. Bella and Edward’s long awaited wedding is the stuff Pinterest dreams are made of. The woodland ceremony with lashings of white flowers is perfect for their declaration of forever love. Bella’s wedding gown had the most sensational back detailing as well.

Arguably one of the most beaming brides to grace our screens, Julie Andrews as Maria saying her “I dos” to marry Baron Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) is a breathtaking scene.
