Some travel experiences live in your imagination for years.
For me, staying in an overwater villa in the Maldives was one of them.
Like many people, I’d seen the photographs countless times – those iconic villas stretching out over impossibly blue water, private pools suspended above the ocean and sunsets that seem almost too beautiful to be real. It was always one of those “one day” dreams.
Recently, that dream became reality when I stayed at Radisson Blu Resort Maldives, and I can genuinely say the experience exceeded every expectation I had.
From the moment we arrived, I knew this place was special.
The first thing that struck me wasn’t the stunning scenery – although that certainly takes your breath away – it was the people. Every member of staff we encountered was warm, professional, attentive and genuinely welcoming.
Nothing was ever too much trouble. The service was seamless, thoughtful and incredibly personal without ever feeling intrusive.
Then there was the island itself.
The sand is quite simply the whitest sand I have ever seen. As an Australian, I’m fortunate to have visited some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, including Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays, and this was remarkably similar. Brilliant white sand meets crystal-clear turquoise water, creating that postcard-perfect Maldives colour palette that honestly looks photoshopped in photographs.
Except it’s real.
The water surrounding the resort is so clear that you can see marine life from the jetty. Every shade of blue imaginable surrounds the island, from pale aqua through to deep sapphire.
And then there was our villa.
Our overwater villa featured its own private pool overlooking the Indian Ocean, with plenty of space to relax and unwind. Waking up each morning, enjoying a coffee with those incredible ocean views, or slipping straight into our own private pool felt surreal. With its spacious layout, peaceful surroundings and beautiful views, the villa was the perfect place to slow down and simply enjoy every moment.
What surprised me most, however, was the snorkelling.
I’ve snorkelled in many places around the world, but the house reef at Radisson Blu Maldives is truly extraordinary. We saw turtles, reef sharks and countless tropical fish, making every snorkelling experience so memorable. The resort also supports coral regeneration initiatives, helping contribute to the restoration and protection of marine ecosystems.
The absolute highlight of our stay was an excursion to see whale sharks.
If you have this opportunity, take it.
We were fortunate enough to have five separate whale shark sightings in a single day, making it one of the most unforgettable experiences of our Maldives holiday. The first time I slipped into the water and found myself swimming alongside one of these magnificent creatures, I was overwhelmed with emotion. In fact, I was crying inside my snorkelling mask.
It was one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences of my life.
Adding even more meaning to the experience was the presence of a marine biologist who joined us on the excursion. Based at the resort, she educates guests about marine conservation, sustainability and the importance of protecting the fragile ecosystems that make the Maldives so unique.
Then there’s the food.
Wow.
The dining options at Radisson Blu Maldives are exceptional. Fresh seafood features prominently, there are multiple restaurants to choose from and every meal felt like an occasion. One evening, we enjoyed delicious Japanese cuisine, while breakfast each morning was a world-class buffet featuring everything you could possibly want. From fresh seafood to international favourites, dining at this Maldives resort was a highlight of our stay.
I genuinely struggled to find a single fault with the entire experience.
The resort is immaculately maintained. The villas are luxurious. The dining is exceptional. The marine experiences are unforgettable. The service is outstanding.
Most importantly, Radisson Blu Maldives delivers something increasingly rare in today’s world: genuine wonder.
If you’re dreaming about a honeymoon in the Maldives, a romantic escape, an anniversary celebration or simply a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, Radisson Blu Maldives deserves a place at the very top of your list.
For me, it was everything I had dreamed it would be.
And so much more.
We’ll absolutely be back.
