Wedding Photography Facts

Q1. Why should I choose a professional photographer?

Even if your cousin takes some great family snaps you shouldn’t give her the massive responsibility of creating your wedding album. Your day will flash by so you want to be sure you can trust your photographer to capture every special moment. Remember these images will be something you’ll treasure forever.

Q2. How do I start looking for the right photographer?

Think about the style of photography you like. Is it candid or more formal or a mixture of both? The best way to choose, is to get recommendations from friends who have been married and your wedding suppliers – your florist, cake designer and reception venue. Have a look at our photography gallery for further ideas. When you find someone you like make an appointment to visit them. Visit at least three and so it as soon as possible as the best wedding photographers are sometimes booked out more than a year in advance.

Q3. What should I look for in my photographer?

There are three main things to look for. The quality of their work – check out some sample albums. Are the shots from the whole day? Are they clear and do they capture the day you the way you had envisaged?

The second thing is to check the reputation of the company. Ask other suppliers what they think.

Finally, what’s the personality of the photographer like? You will spend a lot of time with this person so you have to get on and share the same vision. If you don’t feel comfortable they aren’t the right one for you.

Q4. I know there are some professional associations for photographers, can you tell me more?

The main association in Australia is the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP). Their members are bound by a Code of Ethics, which means you can expect very high skill levels, professionalism and quality service.

Q5. What should be included in the price?

Most wedding photographers will offer packages, which can include lots of different things. A basic package can include the time spent photographing on the day, the prints or proofs and a certain amount of pages (sides) in your album. Lots of photographers will tailor a package according to what’s important to you. For example you might want more sides in your album and a seven-hour photography package that expires when you’ve done the bridal waltz. Or you might want the photographer to stay until the end of the reception as well as an additional album for your parents. There are lots of options, so do your research and talk to your photographer.
