Your guests will appreciate the time and trouble you take to plan an attractive table setting whether it is a formal sit-down dinner or a small intimate gathering. Next, decide on a colour or theme to dress up the table. No matter what your featured colour, a neutral background is the easiest to work with. Our elegant black and white setting is timeless and one you can add a splash of colour to for extra interest. The placemats and napkins are made from fine cotton but don’t limit yourself – there are endless fabric choices available. Napkins have a practical purpose but can be turned into a decorative feature of the table. You don’t have to match your placemats or tablecloth. Whatever colours you choose, think about how they will compliment each other and the food you serve.
Materials
- 25cm round craft wood placemats
- 30cm decorative cotton fabric (this will make approximately three placemats)
- 30cm dark grey iron-on interfacing
- spray adhesive
- pinking shears
- glue tape
- napkins
How to create
- Iron cotton fabric and cut into circles 2cm larger than the craft wood placemat.
- Spray one side of the placemat with spray adhesive and stick onto the wrong side of your fabric circle. Quickly smooth fabric before glue completely dries to avoid any lumps or creases.
- Put 1cm cuts into the overhanging fabric before turning and gluing it to the other side of the placemat. The cuts make this process easier to handle and look neater.
- Cut a 23cm circle out of the interfacing and iron the sticky side onto the back of the placemat.
To make a decorative band for the napkin, cut and press a strip of fabric 8cm wide X 13cm long. Press fabric and fold the raw edges to the centre back leaving a neat 4cm wide band. Use the pinking shears to neaten the ends and stop any fraying.
Fold the napkin as shown below, place the decorative band around the centre and glue the ends of the band together with glue tape.
