A DIY Wedding with Vintage Styling in Country Australia

Modern Wedding Posted: November 27, 2013

A M Y  &  C O R Y

Amy and Cory were on a budget, but that didn’t stop their big wedding plans. With inspiration from Modern Wedding’s DIY magazine this clever couple got to work and created a detailed DIY wedding to remember. ‘We both felt it very important to have a day that reflected our tastes and where we live. So a country wedding with vintage elements seemed to fit. We both love vintage things. I love vintage clothes, items, lace, material… the list goes on. My husband likes old items such as cameras, oil lamps and of course – classic mustangs. His 66 mustang was always going to be our bridal car!’

Indeed Amy and Cory’s love story is threaded together with their common delight in all things vintage and the old world details that dot their special moments together. Cory even proposed with a vintage typewriter that he had restored himself and painted pastel pink – Amy’s favourite colour. ‘He surprised me at a cafe (where we had our first date) one afternoon. The pink typewriter was on the cafe counter when I walked in. The proposal letter was typed up inside… he scrolled, I read… then came the ring! I had a picture (crumpled & worn with age mind you!) of a solitaire ring with a vintage setting. I had never found anything close in a shop. My husband had snuck the picture out of my place, took it to our local jewellery designer and had it made for me, I had no idea!’ recalls Amy.

The couple chose to hold their ceremony in a 100-year-old wool shed on a friend’s farm in Woolomin NSW. Guests were directed to the shed with handmade wooden signs. Hay bales with seating covers sewed by Amy’s mum were used as seating while hanging fairy lights and a wedding arch served as a focal point. Cory made the wedding arch from scratch – designing and welding the steel himself. ‘I thought I was the crafty one but as it turns out, anything I can do – my husband can do better! Seriously! It was great for production…not so great for my ego,’ laughs Amy. Amy made the bouquets and boutonnieres herself using a combination of silk, dried and fresh flowers. The couple included their daughter Ella in their vows and Cory presented her with an engraved necklace.

Gray Photography captured all the memorable moments. ‘I had looked at 70+ photographer websites already and didn’t really know what I was looking for, but knew I would know it when I found it,’ says Amy. ‘Gray Photography is Sydney based and we are in the country (6 hours away) and when we contacted him, he just happened to be in our town to shoot a wedding the next day. We met him at the pub for a chat and he was the most approachable, fun, easy-going guy. We just knew he was the right photographer for us!’

Their reception followed at Gregory’s on Goonoo Goonoo where a rustic vintage theme was continued using hessian, doilies and bunting in the same pastel colours as the bridesmaid dresses. They made use of their own vintage décor collection, decorating tables with vintage china tea cups, oil lamps and various vintage ‘knick knacks’. The typewriter Cory proposed with was placed on the guestbook table along with a fingerprint tree Amy had made. Friends and family were entertained with a photo booth that Cory made. ‘He welded one up and my mother-in-law sewed the material for the roof and walls. Cory put in the floor and made a box that holds the camera and screen, then he wired it up. It’s pretty impressive!’ says Amy.

Amy’s sister Carilee made their wedding cake – a red velvet cake with white cream cheese frosting inside and fondant on the outside decorated with fresh succulents. The party also indulged in a ‘bake stand’ with home made apple pie, custard tart, triple chocolate mousse cake and triple berry pie all prepared by the friend of a local baker. Guests were thanked with pots of honey from a local honey farm. The pots decorated with calico and twine were stamped with the sentiment ‘ C & A Sharing life’s Sweetness’.

Their nicknames are Elly Meg and Addi May and they adore each other as much as we adore them! We are continuing to DIY our home and Cory hires out the photobooth he made for our wedding (Tamworth Photobooth Hire ) as another side business, he also drives his mustang for weddings and formal on the side too. I am still studying my BA, majoring in psychology, from home and being a stay at home mum.’ – Amy
