Bridal Tanning Secrets Straight From The Experts

Modern Wedding Posted: February 29, 2020

Every bride wants to feel tanned and sunkissed on their special day, but achieving that incredible glow isn’t always easy. In fact, we find ourselves searching for hacks and secrets all the time! So we asked the experts from Sunescape for their tips and tricks for nailing that at-home glow!

Take It To The Experts…

Whether you’re the queen of fake tan or new to the world of bronzing, many brides look at the option of fake tanning for their wedding day. Despite what most people think, you don’t necessarily have to go to a tanning salon to achieve that airbrushed look! We got in touch with the experts from Australia’s award-winning tanning company Sunescape to learn all the secrets to achieving that perfect veil of bronze.

So Many Choices…

Opting to do your tan at home means you have total control! You can decide how deep you’d like your tan to be and it’s easy to correct any mistakes quickly. Listening to the experts’ advice, they recommend practicing one month before the event (eg. your wedding day) so you can get comfortable with the product. This also lets you see how your application looks in photos well before the actual day (or the event you are tanning for). When looking to self-tan, there are two main options to choose from. First is the Instant Self-Tan Mousse, perfect for achieving a deep natural tan that dries quickly and develops in 3-4 hours. Alternatively, you can choose to use a Gradual Tan Extender if you’re after more of a subtle sheen.

Before You Tan…

When tanning at home, it’s all about how you prep your skin beforehand! Make sure you shave and exfoliate your skin 24 hours before you plan on tanning so your tan glides on effortlessly. This ensures the tan won’t seep into any open pores or end up streaky or patchy. Sunescape’s Exfoliating Body Polish and Tan Removal Mitt are the perfect products to ensure your skin is prepped and ready!

Application Is Key…

Before applying your tan, it’s important to moisturise those places that tend to get dry. Focus on your elbows, knees, ankles, and hands so your tan won’t cling and become patchy. Be sure to follow the application instructions carefully too! They’re extremely helpful and will confidently guide you through the steps, as we know it can be a little daunting trying to get the perfect amount of coverage in all of the right places.

A Few Helpful Hints…

First thing’s first…pump the formula onto one of the Application Mitts and use long, sweeping motions to smooth the formula over your legs, arms, and body. Applying your tan is also so much easier in front of a mirror because you can check for any streaks or missed patches! Once the tan is spread on, use circular motions to buff the tan into your skin. When it comes to applying the tan to your face and hands, only use 1/4 of a pump and switch out the application mitt for a make-up brush (honestly, this is the best tip EVER). The brush will allow for even coverage in the trickiest spots, especially the eyebrows, hairline, and knuckles.

Aloha, Babe…

So, by now you’ve done all the hard work and you’re halfway to looking like a bronzed goddess that’s just spent a week in Hawaii… Now it’s time to reward yourself and let that tan develop (allow 10 minutes for the product to dry before popping on loose clothing). So flick on your favourite Netflix show, sit back and wait 4 hours until washing it off in a cool, quick shower. It’s also important not to use any soaps or scrubs because that can impact the tan. That also means not washing your hair when you wash off your tan! Oh, and don’t be alarmed if you’re not looking as tanned as you anticipated as the gorgeous, glowy tan will develop over the next 12 hours.

Caring For Your Tan…

Last but not least, the post-tan tips! Maintain your bronzed status with a gradual tanner, especially if you plan to honeymoon straight after your big day. This way, you can rock up to your tropical island already looking like you’ve been there for a week! If you find that you need to cover up any streaks or add some extra glow, don’t despair! Sunescape’s Illuminating Body Tint works wonders. This creamy lotion will add an instant glow and shimmer to your skin and will wash off when you hop in the shower!
