The People You Can Axe From Your Wedding Invites

Modern Wedding Posted: January 20, 2019

The People You Can Axe From Your Wedding Invites…

Your wedding is one of the most special and memorable moments of your life. You want to celebrate surrounded by the most important people in your life. Like your second cousin once removed. Or your friend’s children who can’t sit still.  Suddenly you have a room filled with people you invited out of obligation and your day is no longer about you and your closest family and friends. Celebrate your day with who you choose with this list of people it is okay to axe from your wedding invites.

Your Friend’s Children…

Kids are cute. Kids are also loud, unpredictable and restless. Nobody wants a crying child to interrupt their vows or running around the dance floor distracting from speeches at the reception. A no kids rule avoids all of these issues. It also makes sure your friends have the chance to dance and celebrate with you rather than leaving early because their kids are falling asleep. It’s a win for everyone. Of course, an exception can be made for the flower girl and page boy who are adorable additions to any wedding party. Your Boss…

Nobody’s idea of fun is watching how they behave so they don’t embarrass themselves in front of their boss. If your boss is your bestie then absolutely invite them to your wedding. If you only interact in a professional context then it may be best to leave them off the guest list. Having them there could be weird for both of you.

Your Parent’s Friends…

They may know every single detail about your wedding. They may have even given your mum the name of a great wedding cake designer (probably from checking out our favourites here). But when was the last time you actually saw your mum’s best friend? If you don’t catch up with them regularly, there is no need to add them to the guest list. Your parents will probably enjoy telling them every detail of the day from start to finish and showing off pictures more than actually having their friends there.

Your Long Lost Friend…

Did you plan every detail of your dream wedding with your childhood bestie? Or promise your college roommate that you would be bridesmaids at each others weddings? More importantly, do you still keep in regular contact with these people? You might have once been two peas in a pod, but if that is not the case anymore, don’t feel the need to invite them. Your wedding is a celebration of the present, not the past.

Plus Ones…

Wanting a small an intimate ceremony is the perfect reason to keep your guest list to a minimum. Axing plus ones from your wedding invites altogether is the easiest way to get rid of all your unwanted wedding guests. This makes saying no to your friends new boyfriend who you secretly hate so much easier. Just explicitly extend the invite to anyone you want to be there who would usually be considered a plus one.

Flying solo…

If your wedding invites are getting out of hand, one solution is to invite nobody. An elopement makes for an extremely intimate and personal wedding, with few others present other than you and your partner. This might solve the invite list drama, but does mean that you wont get to celebrate your day with loved ones.
