When Should You Send Out Your Wedding Invitations?

Modern Wedding Posted: January 21, 2019

As you piece together your special day, we recommend setting out a timeline for your planning process. One of the most important things to factor in is when you will be sending information to your guests. After all, they are a crucial part of your celebration! So when should you send out your wedding invitations? We have the answers to all of your wedding invitation questions and queries!

Save The Date

It is proper etiquette to ensure that you give your guests plenty of warning of your wedding date. Whether this is so that they can take time off work, organise babysitters or book flights, you want to allow them time to get everything in order! If you are choosing to send a ‘Save The Date’ card, this should be sent out 6 to 8 months prior to the wedding.

You’re Invited

There are many couples that are quite unsure of when to send out wedding invitations, so what is the timeline for this? Ultimately, wedding invitations should be sent out between 6 and 10 weeks before the wedding date. If you are having a destination wedding, then invitations should be sent out 3 months beforehand. This gives your guests plenty of time to organise flights and accommodation. If you have chosen to not send save the dates, then invitations should also be sent 6 to 8 months prior to the wedding date.

RSVP

Be sure that you set an RSVP date for 2 to 3 weeks before the wedding. This will give you plenty of time to get final details sorted and to have a final number of guests. Make sure you provide your guests with a convenient way to contact you, such as an email or postal address. For any guests that fail to RSVP, simply send them a message or give them a call to confirm! An RSVP will also give you the chance to gather some more information for the day, such as any dietary requirements, plus one’s, song requests or meal options.

Is It Too Soon?

There is often a lot of debate about whether or not you can send out wedding invitations too early. Whilst you may be planning to wait a few years before being wed, it is important not to jump too far ahead in your planning timeline. Stay as close to the timeline as possible, as sending invitations too early can mean that some of your guests may forget or not be able to commit to your future date. Don’t forget, you are certainly able to chat with your friends and family and give them an idea of when the wedding will be so that they are aware.

What To Include

A wedding invitation is the final chance you have to formally pass information to your guests. It is important to ensure that you provide your guests with all of the relevant details. This includes:

  • Who the invitation is for. Be sure to include if plus one’s are welcome or if the event is strictly invites only. If you are allowing plus one’s, have a space for the name to be included, as well as any other required information.
  • The date of the wedding.
  • The timeline of the day and most importantly, when guests need to be there.
  • The address of both the ceremony and reception venues.
  • When and how to RSVP. This is often on a seperate card which can be easily be sent back.
  • Dress code for the event or a theme that may be included.
  • Parking and transport details.
  • For destination weddings, be sure to include any information regarding accommodation.
  • If there are any events surrounding the wedding such as brunches or dinners, be sure to include these details as well.
  • If you have opted to use a wedding website, include this information too!
